I have super fine hair and am always looking for ways to make it look thick and full of volume! With curls and and braids I can usually fake how thick my hair is but with a bun it always looks tiny and kind of puny. Of course, I’ve tried the “donut” and “sock” buns before but I feel like with my hair it still looks a little weird. Plus, almost everyone knows now that you have a big sock on top of your head! …which is kind of funny. I know a lot of women have fine hair like me so I wanted to share this look with you all!
A few weeks ago I spilled all the dets on what kind of hair extensions I use and my history with them (you can find that post here!!). I use a small pieces of those clip-in extensions with this hairstyle. I wanted it to be just all hair in the bun. For all of you who have naturally thick hair — I’m jealous! Okay now let’s get started with this hairstyle.
Spray any necessary dry shampoo (who washes their hair every day anymore??) and then gather a little baby ponytail at the top of your head. This should only be a little bit of hair!! It will look super funky.
Next, take take a weft or two (or five!) of your extensions and clip tightly around the elastic of your baby ponytail. The more extensions you use = the bigger the bun will be!
It’s a little hard to see, but can you see the outline of the top of the extensions at the top of my head? This is what it will look like when you do it.
Then, brush all of your hair into one big ponytail. If you’re wanting a thick ponytail — this is the way to do it! You could just leave it like this and curl it a bit to help the extensions blend. But of course, right now we’re focusing on creating a bun.
Spray your hair lightly with hairspray so it gets a little texture and isn’t so slick.
Because your ponytail is so thick, now all you have to do is just twist the ponytail around the base which essentially creates the perfect bun. Place bobbypins all around the base of the bun
You’ll also want to place bobby pins directly into the bun from above — this will help the bun keep its shape because there’s so much hair!
Yay! All done. Make sure to set with hairspray and then you’re good to go! The bun should be super malleable. After I took these pics I adjusted the top part so it blended in more!
